In SHARP’s words, these show “how this model of helmet performed at each of the five impact locations on the helmet during the three linear impact tests against the flat anvil”.

What the zone scores mean

SHARP grades each test point in six colours from “Very good” to “Poor”, set by the peak acceleration it measured (the forces passed to the head), with boundaries linked to the risk of injury found in the COST 327 crash research. We show its colours with the score from SHARP’s key, 5 (very good) to 0 (poor):

  • 5 out of 5 (green)Green: Peak acceleration up to 275g (the ECE 22.05 test limit at 7.5 m/s)
  • 4 out of 5 (yellow)Yellow: Up to 300g (the BS 6658:1985 limit at 7.5 m/s, which SHARP uses as the maximum for a 5-star rating)
  • 3 out of 5 (orange)Orange: Up to 400g
  • 2 out of 5 (brown)Brown: Up to 420g
  • 1 out of 5 (red)Red: Up to 500g
  • 0 out of 5 (black)Black: Over 500g

How SHARP tests: each model gets 32 impact tests (30 linear, 2 oblique) on at least seven helmets in a range of sizes, at 6, 7.5 and 8.5 m/s, against flat and kerb-shaped surfaces; the results are weighted by real accident data to give the star rating, with 5 stars the highest. SHARP buys the helmets it tests from UK retailers. SHARP testing.
